What We Do
The Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC), which is the regulatory authority over the nuclear energy, and radiation safety in our country, is committed to overseeing the safety of operation and decommissioning of nuclear power plants, nuclear facilities, radiation-related workplaces, and radioactive waste safety. In addition to strictly enforcing nuclear and radiation safety regulations, and implementing emergency response mechanisms and environmental radiation monitoring, the NSC also maintains an independent, professional, and impartial stance and is actively engaged in international cooperation to strengthen supporting regulations and supervisory activities in line with international trends. In accordance with the principle of intergenerational justice, the NSC is actively engaged in nuclear, radiation and radioactive waste safety regulation to ensure the environmental safety and public health.
In addition to nuclear regulatory activities, the NSC also takes charge of nationwide environmental monitoring on ionizing radiation through its affiliated Radiation Monitoring Center (RMC). The main duty of the RMC is to ensure the national safety by carrying out national environmental radiation monitoring environmental radiation monitoring around nuclear facilities, measuring the amount of radioactivity in common foods, as well as the “Megaports Initiative” to monitor radioactive materials at cargo ports.
An emergency response system is the last line of defense for nuclear safety. The National Nuclear Emergency Response Center, led by the NSC Chairperson, oversees off-site nuclear emergency preparedness and management, whereas the facility operator takes charge of the on-site mission.
The NSC is also the competent authority of nuclear safeguards and security in Taiwan. Though not a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Taiwan commits to pursuing a civil nuclear program in a manner consistent with the content of the NPT and is in compliance with relevant IAEA safeguards agreements.
Today the NSC continues its mission in nuclear regulation to ensure safety.
