The Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER) governed by the Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC) has recently developed a convenient, fully functional, and inexpensive FNS-99 instrument equipped with a smart mobile phone for fast radiation detection. It can be used everywhere around the world for detecting radioactive nuclides and their dose rate. Now, those sources of invisible, smell-less and intangible radiation can be easily handled.

It has been one of NSC's important tasks to provide different choices of monitoring instrument, which can be used to reinforce the education of environment protection in elementary and middle schools, and to encourage the participation of civil environmental protection groups and general public in radiation detection, thereby building up associated radiation protection networks. Therefore, INER has devoted lots of efforts to the development of various hardware and software using self-developed technologies to replace expensive imported products in radiation protection, and successfully supported domestic organizations and companies to establish qualified specialists and environment protection network.

Combined with a smart mobile phone, FNS-99 is a handy instrument equipped with NaI detector, developed under the cooperation among INER, the Radiation Monitoring Center (RMC) and the National Tsing-Hua University (NTHU). The core processor is based on INER-patented 160 MHz high speed pulse analysis chip synchronized its signal to a local mobile phone. It has the ability for large area detection and can continuously work for 8 hours when fully charged.

A Dupod 700 smart phone was used as the prototype instrument. It has the capability to adopt the full range "alpha" spectrum, identify different nuclides, and calculate detected dosage. Through its Bluetooth function, WiFi/GPRS/3G, GPS antenna and internet connection, FNS-99 can detect radioactive nuclides and dosage without limitations in any geographic locations and time. It also contains a high capacity SD memory card to store tens of thousands of data including instantaneous energy spectrum, nuclide activities, and geographic information. With the convenience of internet access, it's easy to perform the task of radiation detection in a large area anywhere around the world.

FNS-99 has broad applications when used by local government officers and community environmental inspectors. FNS-99 can be used for radiation detection from leakage of liquid and gaseous waste pipes and containers. The handy tool provides functions for on-line monitoring, checks and impeachment for community radiation protection, management of radioactive materials, inspection of metal scrap delivery, and environmental radiation monitoring, etc.
