The United States National Nuclear Security Adminstration, Department of Energy (DOE/NNSA) held a joint meeting on Nuclear/Radiological Security for Major Public Events (MPE) in San Francisco, California, on February 1-4, 2016. The objective of the meeting was to illustrate the U.S. security preparedness for National Security Events/ Major Public Events associated with Super Bowl 50. Following a day to view a demonstration of the security planning and radiation detection equipement, the next two days included observations of and technical interactions with the DOE Nuclear/Radiological Security Operations associated with Super Bowl activities. The purpose of this joint meeting was to provide to partners hosting a MPE an enhanced awareness and understanding of the development of a radiological security plan in support of the overall security.  This joint meeting provided awareness of the concepts of best practices and techniques for the implementation of radiological security measures aiming to prevent, detect, interdict, and respond to the potential or actual criminal or terrorist acts involving radioactive material.

Considering the resources in different countries, the international cooperation and network will play an important role in mitigating any unexpected attack. Thanks to the bilateral agreement between Taiwan and the U.S., the statement of intent and its work plan by the Office of Nuclear Incident Policy and Cooperation, DOE/NNSA generously supports many training opportunities for Taiwanese authorities. The continuous involvement through the bilateral exchange as well as international exchanges like this joint meeting will further enhance our nuclear security/radiological capability to deal with any major public event held in Taiwan.
