Event Highlights:

Mr. Shigeki HARA, General Manager of The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc., and Dr. Kazuyoshi MASUMOTO, Prof. emeritus of High Energy Accelerator Research Organization visited NSC on November 18-19, 2025. The two experts each shared insights and exchanged views on the current status and experience of nuclear power plants decommissioning in Japan, and on the survey methodology and regulatory standards for activation products in radioisotope production facilities, thereby contributing to the enhancement of nuclear safety regulation on both sides.

 

Mr. HARA shared the status of decommissioning nuclear power plants in Japan, dismantling and decontamination activities, and the management of radioactive waste. NSC also shared the current status of the decommissioning regulatory activities for all three nuclear power plants in Taiwan. The participants engaged in an in-depth exchange with a particular focus on decommissioning technologies and safety regulation. Moreover, NSC arranged a site visit to the Chinshan Nuclear Power Plant. During the visit, Mr. HARA shared Japan’s experience on decommissioning nuclear power plant and held discussions with on-site personnel.

 

Dr. MASUMOTO drew on his extensive research and practical experience, providing an in-depth introduction to the activation assessment, measurement techniques, and Japan’s regulatory approaches for such facilities. His professional insights offered valuable reference for future regulation in Taiwan. In addition to the lecture, Dr. MASUMOTO visited the accelerator facility at NARI, where he engaged in detailed exchanges on practical experience, further strengthening the foundation for international cooperation. The two-day seminar and site visit concluded successfully.
