Participants: Approximately 30 representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Radiological Security (DOE/ORS), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC) and National Atomic Research Institute (NARI)
Activity:
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Radiological Security (ORS) in collaboration with Nuclear Safety Commission (NSC), held the “Technical Exchange Meeting on IAEA Radiological Safety and Security Guidance Documents” from September 2 to 4, 2025. The focus of the meeting was on the international framework for the safety and security of radioactive sources, with discussions covering the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) legal framework, security recommendations, and physical protection system. The goal of the meeting was to enhance the management of radioactive source security through mutual experience-sharing and in-depth dialogue.
The DOE delegation included experts from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL),Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). They shared international case studies, legal framework, best practices and physical protection technologies related to radioactive source security. NSC delivered a presentation on the domestic legal framework and implementation of radioactive source security, and arranged related technical tour.
The NSC appreciates the opportunity for this exchange provided by the U.S. side. In addition to recognizing Taiwan's robust regulatory system for radioactive source safety, both parties engaged in in-depth discussions and exchanges on security issues. This dialogue laid a solid foundation for future cooperation. The NSC looks forward to strengthening international collaboration and contributing to the global effort to ensure the safety and security of radioactive sources.
